The D8 Visa is for digital nomads intending to reside in Portugal.

The Visa D8 Digital Nomad Residence

The applicants to The Digital Nomad Residence Visa (D8 Visa should be non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens.

The applicant must be employed by a company outside of Portugal or self-employed.

Applicants need to make at least 3, 040 Euros/month, four times the minimum wage in Portugal.

The remote worker can apply for a Temporary Stay Visa or a Residence Visa.

The Digital Nomad Temporary Stay Visa is the easiest to apply for and allows to stay for up to one year in Portugal, with the possibility of renewal.

The applicant is allowed to work as a freelancer or online business owner in Portugal for this period, as well as travel freely in and out of Portugal.

The worker can apply for a one-year Temporary Visa at the Portuguese Consulate in his/her home country or at the Portuguese Immigration and Border Service, also known as SEF.
On the other hand, they can also apply for the Digital Nomad Residence Visa for a longer stay in Portugal.

For the Digital Nomad Residence visa, along with the income requirement of €3,040 per month, the applicant will need the following:

  • NIF and Portuguese bank account
  • Proof of tax residence (12 months)
  • Employment contract from outside Portugal or freelancer contract
    Payslips

Procedure to Program

The first step to apply for the D8 Residence Visa should start with scheduling an appointment with the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate of the applicant´s country of residence.

If the application is successful, the embassy will grant a double-entry visa that will be valid for 120 days. With this visa, the worker will enter Portugal and start completing the second stage. 

 

The second stage is the residency permit stage where will apply for the residency permit at the Immigration and Borders Office (SEF).

The applicant must present the following documentation:

  • Visa application form.
  • Valid criminal record certificate.
  • Health insurance.
  • Proof of adequate accommodation in Portugal.
  • Proof of sufficient and available to live in Portugal, shown in the applicant´s Portuguese bank account.
  • Documents attesting the Taxpayer Identification Number (NIF) and the enrollment in the Portuguese Social Security (if applicable).

The resident permit is valid for 2 years, renewable for 3 years.

The holder of a resident permit cannot leave the country for more than 6 consecutive months or 8 non-consecutive months during the validity of each residence permit.

The applicant needs to pay the residence permit fee of 90 Euros.
