Portugal D2 Visa
Build a Business. Build Your Life in Portugal.
Portugal’s D2 residence route is designed for non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss nationals who want to establish residence through entrepreneurial activity, investment in a business project or qualifying independent professional activity.
Is the D2 Right for You?
Start With the Activity You Intend to Build — Not With the Visa Name.
The D2 should not be reduced to “open a company and obtain residence.” The stronger question is whether there is a credible economic or professional activity behind the application.
Entrepreneur or Founder
You intend to create or develop a business in Portugal. The application should make the project understandable: what the company will do, why it makes commercial sense, how it will be funded and how you intend to operate it.
Existing Business Owner
You already operate a business and intend to establish or expand commercial activity in Portugal. The Portuguese operation should have a genuine economic purpose rather than exist only as an immigration vehicle.
Investor in a Business Project
You intend to make an investment connected to entrepreneurial activity in Portugal. The financial resources and intended operation should be proportionate to the business being proposed.
Independent Professional
The D2 framework can also cover qualifying independent professional activity, including situations supported by service agreements or proposals and, where relevant, professional authorisation.
Business & Financial Readiness
There Is No Universal D2 Investment Minimum. That Does Not Make the Financial Case Secondary.
The level of capital should make sense for the activity being proposed. A consulting business, technology company, retail operation and capital-intensive project may all require very different financial structures.
Business Resources
The entrepreneurial route may be supported by an investment already made or by financial means available in Portugal together with a clearly identified intention to invest.
Personal Means
Business capital and personal means of subsistence should be assessed separately. The household still needs sufficient resources to support residence in Portugal.
Proportionality
The financial structure should be proportionate to the project. There is no single number that makes every D2 application credible.
The absence of a universal statutory investment threshold does not mean that any nominal company or lightly funded project will create a strong application. The business model, resources, professional background and implementation plan should support one coherent economic story.
Antes de postularte
The Business Story Should Make Sense From Beginning to End.
Strong D2 applications show a logical connection between the applicant’s professional background, the proposed economic activity, available resources and the practical plan for implementation in Portugal.
Applicant & Professional Background
Experience, skills, qualifications and professional history should support the activity being proposed.
Business or Professional Activity
The application should clearly explain what the project does, who it serves and how it is expected to operate.
Financial Structure
Business funding, available capital and personal means of subsistence should be clearly documented and proportionate to the project.
Portuguese Connection
Preparation may involve company formation, available funds in Portugal, service agreements, business relationships or other evidence supporting the intended activity.
Residence Documentation
Accommodation, criminal-record documentation, insurance, identification and other applicable residence-visa requirements remain part of the process.
The D2 Process
From Business Plan to Portuguese Residence.
The D2 process generally begins outside Portugal through the residence-visa stage and continues after arrival with the Portuguese residence-permit process.
Structure the Business and Residence File
Define the intended activity, document the applicant’s background, prepare financial evidence and assemble the applicable visa documentation.
Presentar la Solicitud de Visa de Residencia
The application is made through the competent Portuguese consular channel according to the applicant’s jurisdiction.
Enter Portugal and Establish the Activity
After the residence visa is issued, the applicant can move to Portugal and continue establishing the business or professional activity.
Complete the Residence Permit Stage
The process continues in Portugal with the applicable AIMA residence-permit requirements and evidence relating to the economic or professional activity.
The objective is to obtain the visa that allows the applicant to enter Portugal for the purpose of establishing residence.
After arrival, residence formalisation and the legal, fiscal or professional structure of the activity become part of the wider process.
Building & Operating in Portugal
The D2 Is Not Only About Entering Portugal. It Is About Making the Activity Real.
Once residence is established, the business or professional activity becomes part of the applicant’s ongoing economic and personal life in Portugal.
Company Formation Is the Beginning, Not the Strategy.
Creating a Portuguese company may be one step in a D2 structure, but incorporation alone does not demonstrate that the underlying business has substance.
Business and Personal Finances Should Be Structured Separately.
Capital needed for the project, operating expenses and household means of subsistence are different financial needs and should be planned accordingly.
Tax and Social Security Become Part of the Picture.
Depending on the structure, ongoing professional or business activity can create Portuguese tax, accounting, Social Security and compliance obligations.
Your Immigration Route Should Match Your Actual Business Role.
A founder actively developing activity in Portugal has a fundamentally different profile from a passive investor, remote employee or financially independent retiree.
Compromiso de residencia
Building a Business in Portugal Usually Means Building Residence Here Too.
The D2 is fundamentally a relocation-based residence route. It is not designed as a low-presence alternative for someone who wants to establish a Portuguese company while continuing to live primarily elsewhere.
Una autorización de residencia temporal podrá ser cancelada cuando su titular, sin motivos justificados, permanezca fuera de Portugal durante más de seis meses consecutivos u ocho meses no consecutivos durante el período total de validez de la autorización.
For founders, entrepreneurs and independent professionals intending to establish meaningful economic activity and residence in Portugal.
For qualifying investors who prioritise Portuguese residence without operating a business locally or relocating full-time.
Planificación familiar
Entrepreneurship May Start With One Person. Relocation Often Does Not.
Business planning should account for the household from the beginning. The main applicant’s company or professional activity is only one part of the wider family residence strategy.
A qualifying spouse or partner may form part of the wider family residence process subject to the applicable family-reunification rules.
Children can affect housing, schooling, financial resources and the timing of the wider relocation process.
Certain unmarried dependent adult children may qualify where the applicable dependency, study and other legal conditions are met.
Los padres dependientes pueden reunir los requisitos cuando se cumplan las condiciones pertinentes de dependencia y reagrupación familiar.
The resources committed to launching or operating the business should not automatically be treated as the household’s available means of subsistence.
Portugal a largo plazo
A Business Move Can Become a Long-Term Portugal Strategy.
For entrepreneurs who genuinely establish both their economic activity and residence in Portugal, the D2 can form the beginning of a multi-year residence pathway.
Visado de residencia
The journey begins with the residence visa based on the qualifying entrepreneurial or independent professional activity.
Permiso de residencia temporal
Temporary residence permits are generally issued for two years and renewable for successive three-year periods, subject to the applicable conditions.
Business & Residence History
Residence continuity and the applicant’s legal, fiscal and professional circumstances become increasingly important as the long-term strategy develops.
The strongest D2 plan considers not only how the business begins, but how the economic activity, family circumstances, residence history, tax position and long-term objectives may evolve over the following years.

Preguntas frecuentes
The D2 residence route is designed for qualifying non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss nationals who intend to exercise independent professional activity or pursue entrepreneurial investment activity in Portugal.
Not in every case. The framework also covers qualifying independent professional activity. Depending on the activity, a service contract or written proposal may form part of the application, and regulated professions may require evidence of professional authorisation.
Portuguese law does not establish one universal minimum investment amount for all D2 entrepreneur applications. The relevant financial structure depends on the project, the resources available and the intended economic activity.
A credible business plan is extremely useful for explaining the project, funding, commercial logic and implementation strategy. However, it should not be treated as the only element of eligibility. The underlying economic activity, available resources and overall coherence of the application also matter.
For entrepreneur applicants, the framework refers to financial means available in Portugal together with evidence of the intention to carry out an identified investment operation. The appropriate documentary structure should be assessed according to the project and consular jurisdiction.
Yes. The framework also covers independent professional activity. Depending on the situation, supporting evidence may include service contracts, written proposals and proof that the applicant meets any applicable professional requirements.
Not by itself. Company formation may support the structure, but a credible application should also demonstrate the underlying activity, financial resources and practical intention to develop the project or professional activity in Portugal.
Temporary residence permits are generally issued for two years and renewable for successive three-year periods, subject to the applicable conditions in force at the time of renewal.
Family members may form part of the wider residence strategy through the applicable family-reunification framework. Eligibility, dependency, household resources, accommodation and documentation should be assessed according to the specific family circumstances.
The D2 is not designed as a low-presence residence option. Temporary residence permits may be affected by absences exceeding six consecutive months or eight non-consecutive months during their total validity period unless an acceptable justification applies.
The D2 creates a legal residence pathway in Portugal. Residence history may later support eligibility for permanent residence and, separately, a Portuguese nationality application where the legal conditions in force at the relevant time are satisfied. These are separate procedures and are not automatic consequences of obtaining a D2 permit.
